Description of the project:

“Light Construction” uses digital technologies, using light, shadows, colors, pictures, infrastructure, sounds etc, to reconstruct a scene of public infrastructure. This enables the possibility of interaction between digital media, infrastructure and public spaces, enabling the public to participate and enjoy the show outdoors.

Through light, we can see new forms of infrastructure: when the light changes we can see changes in infrastructural forms and shapes. An actual wall and light construction creates a virtual interface, revealing a line that exists between continuously missing, continuously changing forms and shapes, an infrastructure form caused by weaving light and sounds. “Light Construction” uses digital technology to create new “incidents”, utilizing light, shadows, and infrastructures to create virtual infrastructural scenery, moving our inner senses, making us imagine a scene that is out of our reality.

A box and virtual network space, walking out of the Fine Arts Museum, “Light Construction” kicks off a brand new model of conversation between digital media and people in the city.

Description of the project:

We are now living in an era of the information explosion. The hard-drive of computer with the function of thinking and memorizing, almost substitutes the brain. Numerous information passing through the internet has being storage to the hard-drive. Today we cannot imagine to live without computers, which functions as the brain prosthesis. Once the hard-drive being damaged, it will cost the price of information-losing, brain-disability and the amnesia.

So that human has the needy for computer. The idea of this work "Sound Disk" is oriented from the specific connection between human and the computer, and the fear of the possible loss of the hard-drive damaging. This sound-installation is using the feedback in-between microphone and hard-drive. In contrast to the idea of the Musique Concrète refers to the composition by numerous notes, the "Sound Disk" is structured by countless sound dots signifying the "0" and "1" of digital world. All of these randomly dots sound, is metaphorically composing to the seemingly tranquil but actually dynamic information sea.

Sound Bulb

1. Description of the project:

Sound Bulb, the sound installation in which different volume of feedback sound generate through microphone and speaker randomly. The small speaker and tiny microphone is inside the same glass bulb. The sound from the small speaker is picked up by the tiny microphone, a “feedback loop” is created. The volume of the “feedback loop” is controlled by the microcontroller, digital resistor and relay randomly while the rhythm of sound/silence unconsciously formulates the soundscape of insect world. The bulb as a container varies different sono-signals by its shape.

Instead of mostly using the PITCH to compose sound work, sound bulb unconventionally by using just the VOLUME creates a purified soundscape of the nature. In the endless circles of sound generation inside the bulb, every moment of silence is the birth of new sound. The silence/sound are as the Yin/Yang of TAICHI, the two elements composing the whole universe.

The core concept of this performance is the idea that the architectural and conceptual framework of the urban space is formed by a wide variety of "buildings". The performing artists try to loosen the rigid architectural structure by projecting lights onto surface of these buildings. What these artists seek to establish here is an imaginary public space whose structure is continuously being reshaped, and boundaries being dissolved.

Beyond 0~20 Hz (To Hear What You Can't Hear)

1. Description of the project:

Beyond 0~20Hz proposes to bring the imperceptible to human perception. It aims to achieve this by using 0-20Hz (i.e. the inaudible sound frequencies of sine waves) as the main source of sound, while digitally controlling the frequencies and loudness of sounds of 0-20Hz. It is so that the device would generate ‘analog faults’ on the loudspeakers that lead to the production of new forms of sound.

0-20Hz: inaudible sound frequencies

Beyond 0~20Hz uses inaudible sounds of 0-20Hz as the main source of sound-making. By and large, people can hear from 20Hz to 18,000Hz (18 kHz); sounds below 20Hz are infrasonic and therefore inaudible. By applying the infrasonic frequencies as the chief device of sonic-arts practice, the work sets out to explore the unknown and imperceptible, yet exquisite world of sound waves. In other words, Beyond 0~20Hz attempts to find a way to allow people to hear the inaudible.

The use of special (non-ordinary) digital measures for digitally controlling the variations frequency and loudness of sounds

Sounds of 0-20 Hz might be inaudible. Nevertheless, controlling the frequency or loudness of 0-20Hz may result in generating new forms of sounds, such as a click or even a sudden pause; or in some cases, the highly random changes of frequency and loudness may generate noise. In other words, variations in frequency and loudness may effectively create various forms of sounds. It follows that the seemingly inaudible sounds could inadvertently construct new forms of hearing experience.

Hearing → Ears → 0-20Hz (inaudible frequencies) → Deconstruction by digital control → Re-construction by triggering analog faults → New forms of hearing experience

This would appear to be an ‘analog fault’ in the digital control, rather than a ‘digital fault.’

There are a number of ways in which changes of sound frequency and loudness can be digitally controlled:

i. Variations in loudness:
a. specific changes in loudness, including a pause;
b. linear changes in the volume (variations in lengths or in speeds);
c. random and non-linear changes in volume (variations in lengths or in speeds);

ii. Variations in frequency;
a. specific changes frequency;
b. linear changes in frequency (variations in lengths or in speeds)
c. random and non-linear changes in frequency (variations in lengths or in speeds).

The use of loudspeakers as a music instrument instead of a stereophonic sound generator

Beyond 0~20Hz utilizes a total of eight subwoofers. (By and large, stereo devices such as loudspeakers, headphones or power amplifiers do not support infrasonic sounds, i.e. those of 0-20Hz.) It should be noted that the subwoofers used in Beyond 0~20Hz are not intended to function as the sound transmitter. Instead, as the variations of sound frequency and loudness are digitally controlled, the physical errors may trigger sounds from the subwoofers themselves, effectively making the subwoofers a music instrument in its own right. As such, each of the eight subwoofers would generate its own distinctive sound.

As a series of attempts to digitally control the sound frequency and loudness are made, Beyond 0-20Hz constructs new forms of hearing experiences, as well as experiments ways in which sounds can be transmitted, by means of triggering the ‘analog faults’ that would prompt the subwoofers to generate sounds. In the meanwhile, the variations in the sound frequency also lead to visible vibration of the subwoofers which can also be perceived as a visual thrill; on the other hand, the abrasiveness embedded in the way Beyond 0-20Hz attempts such experiments can also be seen to inadvertently reveal another sense by which the vitality of the sounds can be perceived: that is, through the touch of the sound-generated pulse.

Each plug of the installation represents different sound and image. The audience could re-connect the plug to alternate the image: as the aura of star light penetrating the blue sky. people moving forward, time passing by,
void background, uncertain scenery, unknown characters,
only the movement of our body wakes us..
unconscious turmoil physically vibrated with the temple,
in a flash, gone with the wind,
the moving of the bodies transfers to the slightly smokes,
disappearing into the scene,
the past pasting and
the senses immersing..

Description:

This work reflects the state of consciousness and tries to conjure the mind tenement of contemporaneity. By shooting the shadows of the people passing through the real world, the consciousness and mind state of everybody that were captured by the surrounding sea of the messages, this work digitally gathers the elements of the physical relationship of body and real world to project the real and surreal spiritual statement of people through the fluid images.

The message world is today’s wild nature. Ostentatiously, the “free will” of human being could control the messages from the internet, faxmille, life and the society. We choose what we want, but we by all means are inevitably falling ourselves, and our “free will”, into the vast quasi-reality.

Meditating the images of Ever Passing Moment, the images of all our lonely selves passing by the world, where are our senses and consciousness flowing to? Where are we?

In the space of the white light, does the light itself have form or does it appear as physical human form?

The light on the bodies of viewers is drawn into the chaos and noise, returned to a silent, floating state and then disappears, leaving all perceptions floating in space. In this process, we are presented with what appears to be the interaction of bodies, but everything is controlled by a program pre-setting machine functions, making it difficult to escape the manmade machine. This work looks in more detail at the contradiction of control that exists between man and machine in an era of technology. Better to let loose the brilliant light that exists in all of us than believe in the omnipotence of technology.

The work was created through micro methods. The video portion takes broadcast TV signals and amplifies them, and a digital video camera is used to shoot microwave flashes in electronic luminous flux. The audio portion use as its raw material the sound of the sea, amplifies it, filters out all but the extreme high- and low-end frequencies, and uses a method akin to "biogenetic experimentation" to restructure, mix, recombine, and mutate different sampled sound sources, converting them into a sea-wave microwave sound signal. The microwave sound signals suggestive of spotlit waves on the surface of a vast sea correspond to the manmade microimage of the noise of broadcast electronic signals, and they are full of the unknown and are surprising.
